The Season of Giving: The benefits of giving and receiving

One of the most important ways you can support the students you are mentoring, teaching and mentoring is to put yourself in their shoes. How can they better their lives and their opportunities? How can they become and/or stay successful? One of the best ways to do that is to think like them. Make it about them! How would you give them the gift of success? Are you willing to take the time to think about what they need and how you can help them grow into successful young adults?
However, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel to make that happen. One of my mentors, Patti Jablonski, has a wonderful quote that she attributes to Lewis Hine: “You can not change the world by just being.” That is, of course, a poignant and positive statement. One can only hope that it is true and not just a convenient summary of something that should be applied in a more open-minded, creative and mindful way. Yet, we all know that “you can’t help the people unless you help yourself.” Yet, so many of us try to do that for others and can’t even help ourselves. This is not to say that we should not make it about others. We should. The problem is, we have so many problems and distractions that are not helping us to think differently.
